Insider's Tip: Australian Opals

Altmann & Cherny is a family owned jewellery business in Sydney with an international reputation for excellence in opals and is one of the World’s foremost Australian Opal authorities.

Australia is known as the country of origin for this splendid stone with 95% of the world’s precious gem opal found exclusively in Australia. The Australian opal displays all the colors of the rainbow; holding a spectrum of colors found in nature. This road trip takes you across the Western Wilds of Tasmania. Seek untamed wilderness, follow in the footsteps of pioneers and uncover wild stories of mining booms and busts in western Tasmania.

Originally constructed in 1856 as the Hamilton Centre of Commerce, Jackson’s Emporium showcases a choice of Derwent Valley produce. The Cafe at Jackson’s offers delicious home-cooked meals, cakes, slices, biscuits, jams, relish and other local products, all prepared in their commercial kitchen. The menu includes a large range of gluten-free and vegetarian options.

Lawrenny Estate Distillery
Located in Tasmania’s Central Highlands district, encompassing a 400 acre area that borders the River Derwent, Lawrenny is a family owned distillery.

Since the early 1800s, Lawrenny Estate has been utilized to supply the finest quality Tasmanian produce. The purity of the surrounding air and water, as well as the picturesque landscape, has provided the perfect location to construct a premium spirits distillery.

Lawrenny Estate Distilling has been established as one of only a very few ‘paddock to bottle’ Estate single malt whiskies in the world. The barley grains are grown and harvested from the Lawrenny fields then malted on site before being mashed, fermented and distilled. The barrels are stored in close proximity to the River Derwent, ensuring engagement with pure Tasmanian air over their maturation period. This results in an exceptionally unique, world class single malt whisky.

Prospect House and Garden
Enjoy the one and a half acres of romantic color-blended gardens, abundantly planted in classic designs and admire the elegant early-colonial architecture of the house with its mellow stone walls. Prospect House gardens demonstrate what can be created in a garden in a dry part of Australia.

There are panoramic views of the surrounding valleys, rolling hills and sometimes snow-capped mountains.

The live-in owners provide guided tours of the gardens for booked tour groups. Open daily 9.00 to 16.00 October to March (other times by arrangement).

Puddleduck Vineyard
This boutique family owned and operated vineyard was established in 1997, and produces premium Tasmanian wines from grapes grown at the single site vineyard, and then processed within an hour of picking in a energy neutral winery. Here you’ll enjoy a friendly cellar door experience, which is sure to include some of the Puddleduck family and a duck or two!

The Wall in the Wilderness
The Wall In The Wilderness is situated at Derwent Bridge in Tasmania’s Central Highlands. It is Australia’s most ambitious art project undertaken in recent years. By 2015 creator/designer, Greg Duncan plans to carve the history of the highlands in 100 meters of timber, most of which will be in our rare Huon Pine.

The beautifully carved works set out in relief sculpture depict the history, hardship and perseverance of the people in the Central Highlands and pay homage to the individuals who settled and protected the area.

Duncan is already known for the uncanny realism he brings to his work and his pieces are sought after by collectors around the world. Each meter of the panels, including horses, thylacines and foresters represents a month’s work.

Coast Wilderness Railway Museum
Using a combination of original authentic artefacts and informative displays, the museum recognizes all those who have played a part in the Railway’s story, from its original construction in the 1890s as a means of getting minerals from the mines of Queenstown to the port of Strahan, to its renewal in more recent times as one of the region’s major tourism attractions.

Entry to the museum is free and it is open daily, with opening hours reflecting those of the adjacent station ticketing office, gift shop and Tracks Cafe.

Detour to Strahan
Strahan is situated on Macquarie Harbour. From here you can take an optional half day cruise on the Gordon River through the pristine wilderness, observe mirror image reflections in the river and peace and quiet of the pristine wilderness around you.

View Map on Google.
