During one of your rest stops try to spot a kangaroo, emu or even a Koala in the wild.

Eyre Peninsula is home to sensational seafood, stunning beaches & coastlines, an abundance of wildlife and inland experience the true Australian outback wilderness and desert. Explore a hinterland of rolling hills and farmland, remarkable rocks and rugged mountain ranges on this 4 Day / 3 Night self drive of South Australia. As they say here, relax, unwind and enjoy a little bit of “fresh Eyre”.

Day 1: Adelaide to Lucky Bay: (approx 3.5hrs drive)
When travelling from Adelaide, you can take a couple of hours off your drive time by getting on the ferry at Wallaro across to Lucky Bay.

Lucky Bay to Tumby Bay: (approx 2hrs drive)
Once on Eyre Peninsula head south to Tumby Bay which is a lovely seaside town with stunning pine tree lined white sandy beaches set in front of turquoise blue waters. It’s a lovely hideaway holiday destination for local Aussies who are looking for rest, relaxation and fun. With excellent water activities like swimming, fishing, boating, sailing, diving & snorkeling, Tumby Bay is truly a spectacular destination. A short distance inland are diverse landscapes, from farming country to wilderness, with spectacular gum trees, perfect for bush walking, birdwatching and native wildlife spotting. The Koppio Smithy Museum is also nearby with a diversity of old historic knick-knacks on display throughout the outback property. The Koppio townships’ original blacksmith shed has been preserved and is on display along with other historic houses and buildings by The National Trust of South Australia. Maybe stop at the Museum for a BBQ in one of their outdoor picnic areas (BYO everything) and help yourself to a cup of tea in the rec room. 1 Night.

Day 2: Tumby Bay to Port Lincoln: (approx 1hr drive)
Further South visit Port Lincoln, “Seafood Capital of Australia”. Indulge in the local seafood, explore the surrounds on 4WD scenic drives and trails, browse the local museum or picnic at the fauna park with the local wildlife. Maybe board a sightseeing cruise (2.5 hours) around beautiful Boston Bay and photograph the playful local Seal Colony. Learn about the Aquaculture including Tuna, Mussel and King Fish. Try Blue Fin Tuna and King Fish Sashimi while relaxing aboard with a glass of award winning local wine. Daytime, twilight and nighttime cruises are available. Fishing trips are also on offer and cater to families, the novice or experienced fisher. Maybe enjoy a half day bay fishing in sheltered pristine waters, or go for a bigger catch on a full day charter. Nearby at Mikkira Station visit a colony of wild koalas – get that perfect koala photo! And if you are a serious adrenalin junkie, then maybe try Cage Diving with the Great White Sharks. 1 Night.

Day 3: Port Lincoln to Coffin Bay: (approx 1hr drive)
Further west at Coffin Bay, try wonderful oysters fresh from the bay, at local restaurants. The well known Gunyah Beach with its amazing sand dunes is located about 15km from Coffin Bay. It’s a sealed road to Coffin Bay National Park (Yangie Trail) from Coffin Bay, then its approximately 12km until you turnoff onto a 4WD track (4WD vehicles only) to Gunyah Beach.

Coffin Bay to Elliston: (approx 2hrs drive)
Located on the west coast, approximately 50km from Elliston, stop to see the Woolshed Cave (also known as a grotto, cavity or eroded cliff).

Elliston to Streaky Bay: (approx 1.5hrs drive)
In the vicinity of Streaky Bay, be sure to visit the magnificent High Cliffs at Tractor Beach. Also don’t miss the popular surf beach called Granites, which boasts a lagoon style rock pool called Smoothpool – perfect for the non-surfers to swim in while surfers are out catching waves. Then relax with a stroll along Yanerbie beach while the kids sand board down the massive white sand dunes. Also nearby are the group of granite boulders & pillars called Murphy’s Haystacks (a rare inselberg rock formation). 1 Night.

Day 4: Streaky Bay to Gawler Ranges National Park: (approx 2hrs drive)
In Gawler Ranges National Park be sure to visit the Kolay Mirica Falls, also known as Organ Pipes, which is the largest exposure of volcanic rhyolite rock in the world. The Park is located off the Eyre Peninsula Highway and can be accessed by unsealed roads at Minnipa, then follow signs along the 4WD-only track to the “Organ Pipes”. Also see Lake Gairdner which is the fourth largest dry salt lake in Australia (after Lake Eyre, Lake Torrens and Lake Frome). Lake Gairdner stretches for 160km in length and 48km across with salt layers up to 1 meter thick in places. 1 night.

Day 5: Gawler Ranges National Park to Port Augusta (optional continue on to Adelaide): (approx 4hrs) As you leave the Ranges, near Minnipa make sure you visit Pildappa Rock which is the longest and highest rock ‘wave formation’ in the Eyre Peninsula. The rock wave is approximately 100 meters long and about 10 meters high, rivaling the famous Wave Rock in Western Australia.

As you travel on through Wudinna, stop to see Wudinna Rock and Ucontitchie Hill. Ucontitchie Hill is internationally significant because of its rare inselberg rock formation (other famous inselbergs are Murphy’s Haystacks and Uluru also known as Ayers Rock). 1 night.
