On your vacation participate in a unique wilderness experience at Piha Canyon in the Waitakere Park Ranges on New Zealand’s North Island.
Just a 45 minutes drive from Auckland, the Waitakere Ranges Parklands offer a dense subtropical rain forest rimmed by wild black sand surf beaches and topped by dominating Kauri trees. This is the setting for your Canyoning Adventure.
On arrival at Piha Beach, you’ll suit up into your equipment and complete an abseil practice and safety talk. Then after a thirty-minute informative native bush walk to the canyon you will begin an exploration through a scenic and interesting canyon.
Have a blast at Piha Canyon, as you repel (abseiling in NZ English) down showering waterfalls surrounded by moss and fern covered volcanic rock walls, swimming through tranquil pools of blues and green. Jumps, caves, and slides will be your means as you explore the canyon. You will also see the remains of the original pioneers’ wood constructed logging dam and learn about the local history and Maori culture.
Finding a nice lunch spot, your group will relax and enjoy the unique surroundings and canyon flora. From the end of the canyon there is a 10-minute walk back to the bus where you’ll change out of the canyoning equipment. Changing rooms and toilets available.
Afterwards you’ll head down to the beach and enjoy the warmth of hot sand on your feet, cool refreshments and the pleasant sound of your canyoning companions as they relax after a great day.
Almost all obstacles are optional; this means you can choose their level of adventure. The Queen Victoria Market is an historic Melbourne landmark and a Melbourne institution dating back to more than 120 years ago.
Queen Victoria Market hasn’t been just a market. At different times in the past it has been a cemetery, a livestock market and a place to sell fruit and veggies (vegetables) wholesale. It is said to be the southern hemisphere’s largest open-air market offering a variety of fresh farm produce and, on Sundays, a wider range of merchant items which turn the market into a modern Arabian Nights bazaar. This is the place to buy your souvenirs.
Aside from the variety of wares offered at the Queen Victoria Market, buskers and street entertainment are a market feature, particularly on Sundays when Queen St is closed and becomes a place of cafes, carnival rides and other activities. And there’s always the sound of spruikers cajoling visitors into buying their goods, and you can haggle for the best prices you’re able to get.
The Queen Victoria Market trading hours are 6am to 2pm on Tuesday and Thursday; 6am to 6pm (with the general merchandise section closing at 4pm) on Friday; 6am to 3pm on Saturday; and 9am to 4pm on Sunday. The market is closed on Monday and Wednesday, and on Good Friday, Anzac Day, Melbourne Cup Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. (Please double check times before you go.)
