Day 3 - Free Day to Explore Wellington

Wellington, voted the ‘Coolest Little Capital in the World’ offers the visitor heaps of cool things to do that just happen to be free.

New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington, sits nestled in a natural amphitheatre around the harbour. It is easy to explore on foot and there are heaps of great things to see and do that don’t cost a cent.

Visit the dynamic and interactive National Museum of NZ – Te Papa on the waterfront. Get your city bearings and some of Wellington’s best views at the Mount Victoria Lookout. Ride the historic Wellington Cable Car to the Botanic Garden. Four Wellington restaurants have won NZ’s Best Restaurant in the last five years. It’s safe to say you’ll be eating very well while in Wellington! Hear the birdsong and spot a tuatara as you walk through ZEALANDIA: The Karori Sanctuary Experience. Get an inside peek into Wellywood at The Weta Cave in Miramar. Go stargazing and check out the amazing planetarium show at Carter Observatory. Seeking hidden treasures? Many of Wellington’s best night spots are tucked away for your finding, such as Motel, Library or Duke Carvell’s Swan Lane Emporium. Head to Cuba Street for a slice of Bohemia, boutique shopping and some of the best coffee in town.

Insider's Tip - Wellington Cable Car

The Wellington Cable Car is one of Wellington’s oldest & most popular tourist attractions.

The cars run from Lambton Quay in the heart of the central business district and within 5 minutes whisk you from under the corporate towers of The Terrace past Kelburn Park and Victoria University to the top entrance of the Wellington Botanic Gardens with its magnificent lookout over the City and harbour – Te Whanganui-a-Tara (The Great Harbour of Tara).

Other attractions immediately accessible from the top station are the award winning Cable Car museum situated in the old cable car winding room and the newly opened Carter Observatory. For those wishing to explore further, Kelburn village with its shops and Cafes is a short walk and an ideal stopping off point on your way to Zealandia. There are also easy downhill walks through the Botanic Gardens to Thorndon or back to Lambton Quay via the historic Bolton Street Cemetery and the Beehive.

A fully escorted tour of Wellington’s Cable Car and Museums is available. First stop the Museum of Wellington for the inside story on Wellington’s intruiging past. A short escorted walk along Grey Street then all aboard the Wellington Cable Car…to the top for the best views in Wellington. Learn more about these ‘Relentless red rattlers’ at the Cable Car Museum. The tour ends with tea/coffee and a homemade muffin at the Skyline Restaurant with its commanding views of the city. Take time to explore Kelburn Village or the Botanic Gardens before returning to Lambton Quay on the Cable Car.

Insiders Tip: Visit the Weta Workshop

Take a trip to the Weta Cave, a mini-museum, a shop and a theaterette that you can visit.



On the corner of the Weta premises in Miramar, Wellington. The museum contains props from films and projects such as Lord of the Rings! In the theaterette we show a 20 minute behind-the-scenes DVD about the work that goes on at Weta. Be sure to visit the shop, which offers everything from souvenirs and Weta merchandise to collectible sculptures.

Children under 10 not allowed. Guides will provide training for those less experienced at kayaking before the tour starts. No guarantee that your sensitive electronic equipment could be damaged against splashing. Or, if you want something a little more relaxed, you can choose from numerous family activities, nature experiences, tours and beauty spas. One hundred and forty years after our establishment as a gold mining camp, central Queenstown has transformed into a sophisticated cosmopolitan town, tucked into a picturesque bay on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, beneath majestic mountains. There’s a permanent buzz in downtown Queenstown, where you’ll find a fantastic choice of restaurants, a lively bar scene and excellent shopping.

Optional Day Tour (Not Included)- Dart River Safari - ½ Day

This jet boat adventure offers your senses a feast of spectacular natural beauty on a journey into the wilderness of the World Heritage-listed Mt. Aspiring National Park.

Your day begins with 1.5 hour journey on a jet boat through the Dart River system. You’ll be surrounded by beautiful snow-covered peaks, hidden valleys & waterfalls. Your day includes a guided walk (30 minutes) along the ‘Heritage Trail’ at Paradise. Your guide will provide you with informative & entertaining commentary about the ancient native beech forest. The forests of this region sit within a World Heritage Area, one of the only natural sites of its kind that is accessible to the public.

Your guide details the fascinating history of this area from the days of Gondwanaland, to quests by Maori for prized pounamu, to the present-day efforts of New Zealand’s department of conservation for the preservation of the area. On the ride home, you will stop to view the epic backdrop for many international movies, including ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy.

Dart River Wilderness Safari is a high-country adventure. To ensure that your experience is truly enjoyable, please: Dress warmly and wear comfortable walking shoes, regardless of season or weather. Bring sunglasses, a sunhat and sunscreen (insect repellent could also be useful in some weather conditions). Note that cameras are carried at customer’s risk.

Optional Day Tour (Not Included) - Bungy jumping from Kawarau Bridge

If you’ve heard of Bungy, you’ve heard of the The Kawarau Bridge Bungy (bungee) jump. Home to the world’s first and most famous of leaps, 43m above the Kawarau River is the world’s best-loved Bungy site.

Opened in 1988, the Kawarau Bridge Bungy is ‘The Original’, the World’s first commercial bungy site. Jumpers launch 43m off this Historic Bridge, which spans the Kawarau River 20 minutes outside Queenstown, New Zealand. Jumpers arrive at the Kawarau Bungy Centre, where they are briefed, weighed and sign waiver forms, before heading out onto the historic Kawarau Bridge. Jump deck crews harness each jumper and attach foot cuffs before 5… 4… 3… 2… 1… BUNGY!


You can choose from a number of options; topple over backwards, forwards, with another person, spin or somersault. Kawarau Bridge Bungy is also the only Bungy in Queenstown where you can choose to bob above the water, touch it, or be fully immersed.

Jumpers are then lowered into a raft and walk back up to the Kawarau Bungy Centre where they can check out photos and videos of their jump (purchasing of photo and video is at an additional cost) and browse through our selection of exclusive merchandise.

Spectators are more than welcome to stop by the Kawarau Bungy Centre. If Transport is needed there is a charge of $30.

Admire the magnificent views of the Hawkesbury River on your drive through the Central Coast. The Hunter Valley is home to Australia’s oldest wine-producing region and owes its fame to world-class viticulturists and fertile soils.

Enjoy a private wine tasting experience at Leogate Estate Wines, which produces trophy-winning wines such as Chardonnay, Semillon and Shiraz, and learn of local wine-making techniques. Visit Hunter Valley Resort, where you can walk among the vines and learn about the wine-making process and the key role the resort plays in this region.

Enjoy lunch made with local produce, while you sample some of the area’s best wines. You’ll also have the chance to purchase a beer tasting paddle from the on-site brewery. Witness the stunning Uluru sunrise and sunset, venture out on the Walpa Gorge walk at Kata Tjuta and discover the fascinating stories of Uluru on a guided base tour.

Sunrise/Morning
The early rise is well worth it as you experience the two major landmarks in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.

Start with an amazing sunrise at Talinguru Nyakunytjaku, the Uluru sunrise viewing area. Afterwards, on the 45 kms drive to Kata Tjuta your Driver Guide will provide you with an historical overview of the National Park.

The walk through the sheer walls of Walpa Gorge won’t disappoint as you’re led into a world of rare plant species and lush evergreen scrubs.

Sunset/Afternoon
Talk a short walk at the base of Uluru with your Driver Guide and view ancient paintings and hear stories of traditional Anangu life.

Then head off to the Uluru sunset viewing area. On arrival you’ll be served from a selection of Australian wines and nibbles.

You can just sit and relax or stroll around the area to find your own personal space to watch an amazing outback sunset.

Take a visit to Port Douglas’ first church, Saint Mary’s by the Sea and see fantastic views of the Coral Sea and distant mountains. Don’t forget to soak up the sun at Four Mile Beach or even take in a game of golf.

Zinc is contemporary dining with a relaxed coastal feel. Insider's Tip: Visit the Wildlife Habitat

Visit four environments and experience a cacophony of wildlife all at once at the Wildlife Habitat Animal Sanctuary located at the entrance of Port Douglas.

Situated on eight acres of land, the park recreates four very unique environments that allow you to see various and numerous species through meandering boardwalks.

Enter through the Savannah, a new habitat offering an opportunity to wander amongst the beautifully rich colored birds of northern Australian open woodlands. Check out the Wetlands where you can view wading birds as they forage for fish beneath the boardwalks, along with marsupials, fruit bats and other bird species.

Come hungry and have the original “Breakfast with the Birds” (extra cost) which will tempt you with a delicious breakfast buffet, juices, exotic tropical fruit selection and bottomless tea and coffee. Watch the clock and make sure to be on time for the Koala Photos (extra cost).

Stop off at the Presentation Hut where you can meet up close with various reptiles, including pythons and crocodiles (check times). If you get hungry stop off at the Cafe where meals and snacks are available or have “Lunch with the Lorikeets” (extra cost).

View the native species of the Wet Tropics at the Rainforest with such animals as the endangered Southern Cassowary, Boyd’s Forest Dragon and colorful Eclectus parrots. Interact and hand feed Queensland’s largest range of kangaroos and wallabies at the Grasslands. Double check the lagoons where the crocodiles are lurking beneath the murky waters or basking on the sunlit banks.

A wonderful day awaits as you are transported on the historic Kuranda Scenic Railway to Kuranda and Rainforestation, set in 40 hectares of lush gardens. Every Sunday Anzac Park comes alive with a local cotter’s market offering clothing, toys, art, fresh juice and vegetables.

If you are in Port Douglas on a Sunday, make your way to Anzac Park for the weekly Cotter’s Market which brings together free traders, artists and farmers. All goods offered at the market were made by the immediate family of the stallholder. You can find locally handcrafted goods such as arts & crafts, pottery, glassware, book, jewelry, clothing, fruit & vegetables and unique Australian souvenirs. This is a must for anyone on the hunt for a bargain or the perfect souvenir.

This half day experience will enable you to get a glimpse of Fiji as it was and now is. You will be taken on a journey of discovery that includes crossing the mighty Sigatoka River via a “push push punt” and then heading deep inland on board your guided off-road vehicle.

Your ATV driver will start your journey along the road less travelled by sharing their knowledge and stories about the nearby villages and what life is like in the village. Along the way, you can see locals going about their daily lives.

After some 35 minutes on the road less traveled, you will arrive at the bete’s or high priest’s home. Your guide will be on hand to explain or answer any questions you may have on Fijian traditions and customs.

After a kava ceremony, the priest along with your Off Road Cave Safari guide will lead you to the entrance of the Naihehe Cave, a mere 5-minute stroll away. The cave is more than 170 meters long and as you go through the initial small opening and into a small cavern, you will soon find yourself in a larger part of the cave.

After exploring and learning all about the Naihehe Cave, you will proceed to the priest’s house where a mouthwatering barbeque lunch complete with fresh fruit and juice awaits you. Bring along a change of clothes as you are bound to take a swim in the nearby freshwater swimming hole as you enjoy the company of your new friends.
