One of the best things to do in Port Douglas is a day trip to Outer Great Barrier Reef. Explore this major wonder of the world with a friendly and professional crew on a new custom-built luxury dive and snorkel vessel.
With the reef being just a few meters away from the waters’ surface, you will be able to explore all these wonders just by floating! Relax, breathe in your snorkel and be ready to discover a multitude of fishes, corals and other wildlife populating the reef.
Snorkeling is the easiest way to discover the Great Barrier Reef, it is as simple as breathing. If you have never snorkeled before, don’t worry, a briefing is held on board, explaining how to put and use the snorkeling gear. All of the snorkeling equipment you will require is supplied as part of your trip, including a wetsuit or stinger suit. Prescription masks are also available upon request.
With exclusive access to 9 mooring sites, you will visit 2 sites on the Great Barrier Reef at Agincourt, St Crispins and/or Opal reefs. The use of a wide variety of these ensures a minimal environmental impact to the pristine coral formations. These sites are frequented by myriads of tropical and Palegic Fish, Rays, Turtles, (friendly) Sharks and the ever friendly Maori Wrasse.
Divers can enjoy swim-throughs, wall and drift dives that will appeal to every level of diver experience. The dive sites are chosen on a daily basis by the vessel Captains for the best variety and visibility according to the weather conditions. Up to 3 dives are available per day.

Visit four environments and experience a cacophony of wildlife all at once at the Wildlife Habitat Animal Sanctuary located at the entrance of Port Douglas.
Situated on eight acres of land, the park recreates four very unique environments that allow you to see various and numerous species through meandering boardwalks.
Enter through the Savannah, a new habitat offering an opportunity to wander amongst the beautifully rich colored birds of northern Australian open woodlands. Check out the Wetlands where you can view wading birds as they forage for fish beneath the boardwalks, along with marsupials, fruit bats and other bird species.
Come hungry and have the original “Breakfast with the Birds” (extra cost) which will tempt you with a delicious breakfast buffet, juices, exotic tropical fruit selection and bottomless tea and coffee. Watch the clock and make sure to be on time for the Koala Photos (extra cost).
Stop off at the Presentation Hut where you can meet up close with various reptiles, including pythons and crocodiles (check times). If you get hungry stop off at the Cafe where meals and snacks are available or have “Lunch with the Lorikeets” (extra cost).
View the native species of the Wet Tropics at the Rainforest with such animals as the endangered Southern Cassowary, Boyd’s Forest Dragon and colorful Eclectus parrots. Interact and hand feed Queensland’s largest range of kangaroos and wallabies at the Grasslands. Double check the lagoons where the crocodiles are lurking beneath the murky waters or basking on the sunlit banks.

Head north on Captain Cook Highway. The short drive from Port Douglas to Daintree Village offers the opportunity to learn about the Aboriginal people who have called the Wet Tropics rainforest home for thousands of years. The Port Douglas and Daintree region is the traditional country of the Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal people who continue to have ongoing connections with the area and offer tours where you can experience their culture.
Mossman Gorge is the southern section of the Daintree National Park where steep mountains, thick with rainforest send the Mossman River tumbling over the Gorge’s massive granite boulders creating cool, clear freshwater swimming holes. Daintree Discovery Centre
Experience the world’s oldest rainforest from every angle at the Daintree Discovery Centre. Climb the 75 foot Rainforest Canopy Tower with access to aerial walkways and boardwalks for exploring the rainforest from a new perspective. As a hot spot for cassowary viewing, the center is one of the most popular places in the world for seeing this unique birds in the wild. The center also features audio guides, native wildlife displays, an interpretive center with touch screens and a coffee shop with sweeping views overlooking MacLean’s Creek.
Daintree Entomological Museum
This private collection of butterflies, insects and bugs displays some of the rarest species found in Daintree and around the world. Founded by Australian naturalist Stephen Lamond, the collection is his life’s work of collecting insects from his extensive travels, made up of over 150,000 specimens. See evolution at work for yourself within the vast collection, allowing you an up close look at how much size, color and shape can vary within a species.

Cape Tribulation
This magical region is where two World Heritage-listed sites collide in a scene of spell-binding natural beauty. Lush rainforest headlands of the Daintree stretch out into the fringing reefs part of the world renowned Great Barrier Reef. Cape Tribulation is where the rainforest meets the reef, where self-guided walks, crab-hunting tours and snorkeling adventures are on offer.

The vehicle ferry is the only way to cross the Daintree River.
It takes about 30 vehicles and operates daily from 6am to midnight except Christmas Day (25 December 2019, from 7.30 am to 5 pm only)
The crossing itself takes about 10 minutes but there can be a waiting times, especially during the peak season (July to September). During these months the busiest hours tend to be mid morning to lunch time going north, and between mid afternoon and 5pm returning south.
The cost for cars is about $30 return. If, however, you are staying for a while there is a Multi-day Pass for about $59, allowing for 5 return trips.
EFTPOS is available at the ferry between 8am-4:30pm seven days a week. At all other times users of the ferry need to pay cash unless they have a concessional card.
Use the ferry to go deep into the heart of the rainforst.
Your drive through the Atherton Tablelands is about 2 hours and 40 minutes.
Today you’ll travel south along Mossman Daintree Road. If you haven’t already took the ferry across the river up to Cape Tribulation to see where the Great Barrier Reef meets the rainforest, now is a great time to do so. At Mossman Gorge take Mount Molloy road through the Tablelands toward Yungaburra to Rose Gums Wilderness Retreat. Maybe check out some stops along the way.

–Mareeba, a fertile district has a reputation as a food lovers’ paradise which can be discovered by visits to tropical fruit farms, coffee plantations, wineries and the Mareeba Markets held on the second and fifth Saturdays of the month.
-The bustling township of Atherton for an education on crystals and caves.
–Hasties Swamp, a seasonal wetland and national park which has an annual cycle of wet and dry, attracting a range of more than 300 resident and migrant birds. The two-storey Nyleta (the park’s Indigenous name) Wetlands Bird Hide has wheelchair access on the lower section.
Upon reaching Rose Gums, you will be adjoining World Heritage listed Wooroonooran National Park – a nature lover’s paradise. Rose Gums itself has 230 acres of private tropical forest offering an unforgettable bush experience.

Explore rainforest walking trails to rainforest creeks, a charming waterfall & through the reforestation plots where 25,000 native rainforest trees were planted since 1995. Options include:

- Waterfall Walk – 90 minute return – moderate grade Venture down to a hidden 5 metre (16 Foot) waterfall, a peaceful walk through remnant Wet Sclerophyll forest; perhaps see the Musky rat-kangaroo and unique birdlife

Wildlife
As Rose Gums itself has 230 acres of private tropical forests, the retreat offers its guests an unforgettable bush experience. There is a unique mix of endangered wet sclerophyll and rainforest which makes for a large diversity in the plant & animal life.
- Every morning at 8am food will be put out for the parrots beside reception and the musky rat-kangaroo’s behind reception. A Wildlife information sheet is in your room for you to self guide at this time.
- Platypus inhabit the large rainforest creeks and are often seen.
- A wild Southern Cassowary often saunters through the forests, particularly when the rainforest fruit trees such as the quandong are dropping their fruit. Cassowaries are only found in the rainforests of north Queensland and their conservation status is endangered.
- Another endangered animal that can be found in the rainforest areas of the Atherton Tablelands is the Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo.
- At Rose Gums over 160 species of birds have been recorded. Your hosts Jon & Peta are keen naturalists and are more than happy to explain the uniqueness of this special place.
- For those of you seeking a Kangaroo experience ( all wild, not fenced in), why not follow the Kangaroo Trail during your stay here at Rose Gums! Visit the scenic Atherton Tablelands, rich in bio diversity, an area that features a range of habitats including lush tropical rainforest and volcanic crater lakes. Enjoy an Afternoon Tea at the world renowned, Lake Barrine. During your adventure by day you may see the Musky Rat Kangaroo, Boyds Forest Dragon, a selection of rainforest birds, butterflies and Flying Foxes. At dusk you venture to the viewing area by the river to search for the Platypus, one of the most unique mammals on earth.
After dinner at a local country restaurant, your night time spotlighting adventure begins. As you walk under the night stars, and into the World Heritage Rainforest, you may be lucky enough to spot a Lumholtzs Tree Kangaroo, Northern Leaf Tailed Gecko, Ringtail Possums, gliders, frogs, owls and more (most are endemic to the region). Begin your self-drive from Yungaburra. You will drive along the Great Tropical Drive headed towards Cairns, Australia.
Departing Rose Gums, you will go to the town of Malanda to start your journey back to Cairns. If you’d like, stop and enjoy a visit to the nearby Tarzali Lakes, Nerada Tea Plantation Malanda Falls, or Rainforest Trails. Your next stop will be Ravenshoe, which is Queensland’s highest town. From here you can relish a swim in the Innot Hot Springs, or tour Mt. Garnet. If you’re the more adventurous type, enjoy one of the walking tracks to see the local wildlife and landscape of the region.
Continue your self-drive to Millaa Millaa. Here you can view some of the most picturesque waterfalls in the area! If you’re feeling hungry, you might want to go explore Mungali Creek, and sample their entire range of award winning bio-cynamic/organic dairy products. Keep heading south towards the MaMu Rainforest Canopy Walkway and experience the thrill of climbing the 37 metre observation tower offering beautiful far-reaching views.
Finally, head back to Cairns via Palmerston Highway, The Great Green Way and Bruce Highway for your overnight in Cairns.

The afternoon is spent visiting a selection of lookouts. Once you clap your eyes on the view from Govetts Leap you’ll know why it’s one of the most famous lookouts in Australia. If you’re not mesmerized by the dancing waves of water spray, you’ll be transfixed by the sweeping views down the valley to the Grose Wilderness.
