Insider's Tip: Queen Victoria Market

The Queen Victoria Market is an historic Melbourne landmark and a Melbourne institution dating back to more than 120 years ago.

Queen Victoria Market hasn’t been just a market. At different times in the past it has been a cemetery, a livestock market and a place to sell fruit and veggies (vegetables) wholesale. It is said to be the southern hemisphere’s largest open-air market offering a variety of fresh farm produce and, on Sundays, a wider range of merchant items which turn the market into a modern Arabian Nights bazaar. This is the place to buy your souvenirs.

Aside from the variety of wares offered at the Queen Victoria Market, buskers and street entertainment are a market feature, particularly on Sundays when Queen St is closed and becomes a place of cafes, carnival rides and other activities. And there’s always the sound of spruikers cajoling visitors into buying their goods, and you can haggle for the best prices you’re able to get.

The Queen Victoria Market trading hours are 6am to 2pm on Tuesday and Thursday; 6am to 6pm (with the general merchandise section closing at 4pm) on Friday; 6am to 3pm on Saturday; and 9am to 4pm on Sunday. The market is closed on Monday and Wednesday, and on Good Friday, Anzac Day, Melbourne Cup Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. (Please double check times before you go.)

Insider Tip: Bunjilaka Melbourne Museum

Bunjilaka is a word derived from two local Aboriginal languages meaning “creation place” and is the name of the Melbourne Museum’s Aboriginal Centre. Developed after a lengthy consultation process, the Centre’s aim is to enable Victoria’s indigenous communities to express their history themselves.

Bunjilaka’s significant collection of Aboriginal cultural heritage items is complemented by a series of performance, exhibition and meeting spaces including a native garden area. Even the Welcome (Wominjeka) Desk serves an important function as part of the customary greeting ritual when welcoming visitors to country.

The museum is open daily from 10:00am till 5:00pm (except Christmas Day and Good Friday); Admission is $10AUD for Adults and Children 16 and Under are Free

Insider's Tip: Melbourne City Circle Tram

The Melbourne City Circle Tram travels a rectangular route along Flinders, Spring, LaTrobe and Spencer Streets right around the Melbourne city centre.

Not only is travel completely free on the City Circle Tram but you get a running commentary on the places of interest along its route. You can get off the tram at any of its stops, so you can visit particular attractions at close hand, and catch the next one.

Trams run in both directions every 12 minutes, seven days a week between 10am and 6pm (except Christmas Day and Good Friday), and during daylight-saving extended hours, 10am to 9pm every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Alternatively, there is a Free Tram Zone for all trams operating in Melbourne’s CBD. These free trams do not offer on-board commentary but are a convenient way to get around the city.

(Day 9) - Day Tour - Yarra Valley Wine Tour

Enjoy the ultimate wine experience with this visit to 4 revered estates, complete with tastings and gourmet lunch.

You’ll be guided by a genuine Wine Expert who is there to entertain and educate you, not just dazzle you with wine snobbery!

Head to Greenstone which is beautifully situated on a single site in the picturesque Yarra Valley. The Winery and Cellar Door, nestled at the base of the Christmas Hills, have unparalleled views of the Estate vineyard and Great Dividing ranges. It is here that winemaking operations are carried out, making Greenstone one of the most progressive wineries in the valley.

Next, you’ll visit Balgownie Estate – clearly one of the most stylish venues in the Yarra Valley with wines to match. Balgownie Estate has a marvelous restaurant with fantastic views and great wines to taste at the cellar door. Enjoy a high-quality restaurant lunch with a glass of Balgownie Estate wine to compliment your meal.

Enjoy a boutique experience at Yering Farm with stunning views and rustic charm. Experience wines made with traditional methods in their cellar door, which showcases antique copper wine making tools used by pioneer wine makers.

End your tour at Soumah of Yarra Valley where the Yarra Valley cool climate focus allows this winery to specialize in wine styles and varieties typical to northern Italy and southeastern France. With awards for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and a passion for northern Italian varieties, you will be sure to find something pleasing while overlooking the rolling hills of the vineyard and the majestic Warramate Hills.

The Blue Mountains Deluxe Day is a real journey into the heart of a unique World Heritage Region. From temperate rainforests to towering sandstone escarpments, you’ll see and experience it all. Let the landscape work its wonders and become part of you for a lifetime.

Upon departing from the city, you will travel directly to the Blue Mountains and your first stop of the day is at Calmsley Hill Farm, a working farm home to KangarooS, Emus, Wombats and Koalas. Enjoy morning tea and time to wander at leisure.

From Calmsley Hill you will continue to ascend the Blue Mountains via the highway. Visit one of a range of stunning outlooks of Jamison Valley, overlooking beautiful vistas. Where possible this will be away from the crowds of tours that visit the mountains each day with other operators. Thus, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing, stress-free environment taking in the views and information imparted by your guide.

Continuing on you will arrive at Eaglehawk Lookout, a remote lookout point away from the crowds for views of the famous Three Sisters. While the Blue Mountains features so much more than this natural attraction, you can’t help but admire the unquestionable beauty of this amazing rock formation. The character of the Three Sisters changes throughout the day and throughout the seasons as the sunlight brings out the magnificent natural colors. Here your guide will discuss the legends behind this famous rock formation and time available for you to take some great photos.

Next you will be taken around the mountain towards the village of Blackheath to your lunch venue, the Hydro Majestic. Here in this relaxed venue with stunning views, you can enjoy a 2-course lunch with tea or coffee. All diets are catered for (excluding Kosher Meals). Please note that beverages can be purchased at your own expense from the Bar.

The afternoon is spent visiting a selection of lookouts. Once you clap your eyes on the view from Govetts Leap you’ll know why it’s one of the most famous lookouts in Australia. The magnificent waterfall drops a whopping 180m to the base of the cliff. If you’re not mesmerized by the dancing waves of water spray, you’ll be transfixed by the sweeping views down the valley to the Grose Wilderness.
