Glendale Cove in Knight Inlet is home to one of the largest concentrations of grizzly (brown) bears in British Columbia. Fall is the peak season and the best time to spot the bears. This is when the largest number of bears are feasting on the salmon running up the Glendale River. However, this is not the only season that the bears can be found in the area. Choose your best time to travel based on your preferences and what you want to experience on your once-in-a-lifetime vacation.

Spring: May – ?????

About 15 grizzly bears and 5 black bear feed on the sedge grasses, mussels and barnacles along the cove’s shoreline in the spring. Spring viewing is done from boats allowing you to get remarkably close to these powerful animals, while still remaining in the safety of the boat. Spring is the best time to see the newborn cubs as they venture out with their mothers into the natural world. Photographers love the lush green background in their grizzly photos this time of the year.

Summer: ???? – Late August

Summer offers the best weather for bear viewing. Tours still take place on the water providing that close encounter experience. Summer also has the best whale watching opportunities.

Fall: Late August – Mid October

The Fall season begins around August 25 as hundreds of thousands of pink salmon begin to surge their way up the Inlet into the Glendale River, attracting dozens of grizzles from miles around. Rather then taking a boat to find the bears along the river, guests make their way to a viewing platforms. Travel across the cove by boat. Then take a small bus along an logging road through lush northern rain forest to the spawning channels. It is not uncommon to see 10 – 15 bears at a time. The 3 viewing platforms in 2 different areas, provide safe and comfortable areas to view and photograph from.
