President Coolidge
Ready to explore one of the top dive shipwrecks in the world? The SS President Coolidge is one of the largest and most accessible shipwrecks still accessible today and is located off of Vanuatu’s largest island, Espiritu Santo. Her history is just as marvelous as her size and beauty.
No expense was spared when this 200 meters long, luxury liner was launched in 1931. Ten years later WWII and the attack on Pearl Harbor caused the United States government to scramble to find available ships. The SS President Coolidge was commissioned, striped down and fitted with military equipment and artillery. Sadly, less than a year later, she entered a mine field off the coastline of Espiritu Santo and sank within 90 minutes.
What makes this wreck even more attractive to divers is that she is nearly intact and offers a wide variety of scenes – you could swim into one area and see exquisite chandeliers and the famous “The Lady and her Unicorn” fresco and then moments later be reminded of her military service when diving next to huge cannons and military trucks that rest on the ocean floor with her.
