Lermontov - A World Class Wreck Dive in New Zealand
Discover a world-class shipwreck dive off the coast of New Zealand when you venture underwater to view Mikhail Lermontov, one of the biggest cruise ships to sink since the Titanic. This ship was mortally damaged in 1986 while carrying 400 (mainly Australian) passengers on a cruise of a lifetime. For reasons still unknown the Lermontov was piloted through a shallow channel at the tip of Cape Jackson where it struck the reef on her port side causing two forty foot gashes in her hull. It was rumored that the Lermontov was a spy vessel and the official government report into her sinking will never be made public. Today Mikhail Lermontov lies at the bottom of Port Gore on her starboard side still intact and is home to an artificial reef plenty sea creatures.
